Robert J. Devaux OBE is a Field Engineer by design, but a conservationist by choice. He has spent a lifetime dedicating himself to the conservation of St. Lucia's archaeology, history, flora and fauna. He actively participated in the creation of the St. Lucia National Trust in 1975. He directed the affairs of the Trust for many years and was the main instigator in the founding of Pigeon Island National Landmark, the East Coast Nature TrailFregate Islands Nature ReserveMaria Islands Nature Reserve and the St. Lucia National Archives. The author of many books and articles, he compiled the now out-of-print St. Lucia Historic Sites in 1975. He received the MBE Award in 1978, followed by the OBE Award in 1991 for his work in conservation. He received the Paul Harris Award in 1993. The following year a plaque at the Pigeon Island Museum was dedicated to him and in 1996 was inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame for his work in promoting Nature/Heritage Tourism in St. Lucia. Now semi-retired he spends his time engaged in personal research and works on topics of historic value for private individuals and organizations through his company the St. Lucia Research Center.
